i can't see the utility of fear-based emotions. sure, survival instinct, instinct for self-protection. but what does feat offer us emotionally? constraint? existential terror? misery and angst?

depends on the exact nature of fear, but generally its constraints on certain behaviors these can be good! part of the reason doing new stuff is scary is because its dangerous, and the fear encourages you to approach slowly so you dont hurt yourself

that sounds tho like survival instinct, not necessarily fear-emotion

youve never been anxious and scared when trying something new? youve never been afraid when doing something risky? fear of death is how the survival instinct manifests

idk. the "person" i used to be definitely felt this. when the sense of personhood left, these feelings also left. what remains is reflex (simple, don't touch the hot pan; complex, don't get swindled)
@chaosprime and i were discussing if these emotions were needed again

i do think that most people (including me) have too much fear but also the right amount is almost certainly nonzero, by chesterton if nothing else

one thing that's been highlighted is what Noelle's calling 'reflex', which seems to be a kind of cautionary aversion that gets processed on an emotional level but has almost no emotional valence, like sure you don't wanna get your hand burned but you're not *scared* to as such

and that it seems like maybe some kind of pervasive miscalibration has arisen where a lot of things that would be appropriate objects of cautionary aversion are objects of fear instead
