one might think that Colt and Fabrique Nationale making overly complex guns that take weird ammo and fuck up all the time is just about cash flow, but there's a real strategic dimension to weapons that only work if you're the exocontact point of a massive industrial supply chain

Every police car contains two m4 carbines, parts from which can be exchanged with any civilian AR to make it full auto. Anybody carrying an AK in north America a larper mostly intrested in the aesthetics of revolution. Except those cops in Alaska, they need a cold weather rifle
-
Wait. Who would take parts of an M4 from a cop car and not the entire rifle.

Yes, very. There arr tons of AR and parts manufacturers here now, all or nearly all interchangeable, and the ammunition and magazines are available everywhere. AK not so much. That inverts in some but not all third world situations, but not really in North America

This doesn't mean it's over for the AK platform though. People are still doing interesting things with it in the middle east where surplus stock and anarchic conditions means weaponsmiths have free reign to do crazy things like turn aks into futuristic Bulpups with rails and camopic.twitter.com/4aCvd28AJU
