wondering why IT professionals seem so overrepresented in buddhism and similar contemplative traditions. @Meaningness might say "access to kegan 4" but why then not biologists, etc? anyone have any ideas? @chaosprime

it's the other way around. (white convert) Buddhism is over represented in computer programmers.

haha, should have just asked "why does the venn diagram overlap so much for buddhism and IT"

I think a lot of it is related to the class background of those programmers (educated, intellectual, middle class) as well as the psychological traits that make adult conversion more likely (high openness, high conscientiousness), and the reputation of Buddhism in America.

yeah, there's a lot of post-hippie memes floating around the coder space

Douglass Rushkoff in "Team Human" argues that there's a dangerous "anti-human" strain of thought wandering around Silicon Valley, with roots in the 60s counterculture (Esalen, etc)

First I’m hearing of anti-human tendencies in the likes of Watts, Dass, etc.

idk if it was those in particular, but there was definitely an influence (i'm aware of it strongly in Carlos Castaneda) to "escape" humanity bc of the suffering, flaws etc

Not sure Castaneda’s take on the tenuous basis of reality qualifies as Buddhism. Saying hallucinations are as real as reality, isn’t saying reality isn’t real. But it’s been awhile. Not a scholar.

i'd said "buddhism and associated contemplative practices" castaneda is dzogchen-influenced spiritual practice. i'm expanding the statement to "all spiritual practices associated w/ counterculture" many new-age groups have violent disdain for humanity

pretty slick how the question of how much '60s counterculture spread because Russian intelligence thought it would do a good job of poisoning American culture is a question one just does not ask for some reason, unless one is a Bircher frothing incoherently about it or something
