... and I'm back to the beginning again. Isn't "higher order" a proxy for eternalism and "lower order" a proxy for materialism? Isn't the point that there is no one there to tell you what to operationalize? Or is that just existentialism.

that does sound like existentialism to me those aren't necessarily what higher order and lower order signify though higher order could be Kegan 5+, lower order could be Kegan 3-

Strange that you should bring this up when I've been thinking about the same thing today. I would say 'moral fiber' is what one needs in order to decide what knowledge need to operationalized and in which way. But one's morality is a function of one's postion in the hierarchy.
