oh, sorry, you mean *entirely* within-brain, don't you. wow, i've gotten out of the habit of even thinking of that as a thing, lol idk, a lot of memetic structures are a lot more valuable when they're adopted all up and down your cognitive stack

Whoever said "just"? :) Please be reassured I'm not asking about it from a dogmatic framework of decontextualising neurocognition ;) But to understand the brain as a complex adaptive system, I believe it's valuable to conceive of it as constituting ecology-like dynamics within.
