when I was little I was fascinated by the fact that I couldn't remember what it was like to not be able to read or understand English I figured out how to put a...gap? between hearing language and actually processing it, so there was a delay

I was actually devastated because while there was a noticeable delay between hearing and full meaning-making, I could *feel my knowledge of what the words meant* almost instantly after I heard them like it was juuuuust barely below conscious awareness

@selentelechia are you left-handed? Am going to get this wrong but Russell Hurlburt teaches ppl to do precise phenomenology & researches w/ them. He claims left-handed people (LHP) (if I'm not getting this both wrong & backwards) have a slight delay in verbal understanding vs RHP2 replies 0 retweets 3 likes -

an anecdote that my mom still shares as a "funny" story even tho it's actually a little horrifying: she got my hearing tested right before I entered kindergarten because I didn't respond to people talking to me consistently. (1/n)

the doctor made a snarky comment like "she's fine, she just has selective hearing
"
I asked my mom what that meant and she said "it means you only hear what you choose to hear" (2/3)1 reply 0 retweets 6 likes -
