The biome goes to the climax and stays there, in the absence of external changes, no? So before reaching the climax it is not in a self perpetuating state, but once at climax it is homeostatic

Yep! That was the view ecology inherited from the conventional wisdom of "the balance of nature". It turns out that when you observe nature closely, what looks like balance to us dissolves into iridescent chaos.
