people are continually amazed at how BMI continues to be a thing despite its obvious massive failings. well, let me clear that up. it isn't a thing despite its failings, it's a thing because of them

BMI is promulgated because of its utility as a tool of liability management for doctors. when something goes wrong and you decide it's Their Fault, it is an unalloyed good for them to have something bad-looking on your chart that is socially constructed as Your Fault

someone smarter than me could infer this just from how people in the "overweight" range have better health outcomes than people in the "healthy" range, which obviously means that the "overweight" range is the actual healthy range and the "healthy" range is the underweight range

Trying to get to the “normal” range is like trying to fit into your jeans from junior year. Good luck building any muscle at all without scaling “overweight.”

just 5'10" or so, what fucks it up for me is the shoulders broader than normally quoted ranges for human male shoulders

yeah, this is where I think BMI breaks down as a useful metric altogether; I'm also ~5'10" and went from 142 to 156 lbs starting at the gym the other summer, definitely filled out, but going to 'overweight' is ~180 and I don't think I could possibly ever put on 30 lbs more muscle

yeah, i was 180 after working out regularly for four years straight and doing things like only eating the crusts of bread because it had the most nutrients and least calories and allocating myself one peanut M&M a day for the theobromine
