BMI is promulgated because of its utility as a tool of liability management for doctors. when something goes wrong and you decide it's Their Fault, it is an unalloyed good for them to have something bad-looking on your chart that is socially constructed as Your Fault

someone smarter than me could infer this just from how people in the "overweight" range have better health outcomes than people in the "healthy" range, which obviously means that the "overweight" range is the actual healthy range and the "healthy" range is the underweight range

for me, it took that plus going in for umbilical hernia repair surgery; specifically, the intake interview, where the experienced surgeon had essentially no concerns other than making sure that an unasked-for BMI diagnosis was on my chart anyway enjoy your medical care

tbh i don't think that would be enough in the face of the evidence if it weren't a case of worse being better for the people who decide which metric gets used
