The entire history of western philosophy and most of the ways you can subdivide that, even the ones that were exploring dead ends. The history of mathematics. Add in technological progress and you get the sciences. Add in aesthetic progress and you get pre 20th century arts

Academia, despite all the faults, is def the main pillar or intellectual progress now Interestingly, one of other pillars is ... tech companies Open-source movement Wikipedia And loose aggregates of people on the internet, incl "rats", "postrats", "transrats", "metarats"

i love me some fuckin' intellectual progress i think of academia as essentially an ideologically captured hollowed out shell

Well there are different parts of academia, and some fields are absolute wastelands. Replication crisis and all that. But I think for natural sciences, though imperfect, the academia has no alternative.
