imagine if it were possible to evaluate phenomena in your life from the standpoint of whether they're making your actual experience better or worse rather than in terms of what kind of person they're socially understood to be indicating you as being what would that world be like

Am I silly for thinking there would probably be a lot more racists?

Afaict you're describing something close to conservatism

your experience of conservatives is of people not concerned with what kind of person things imply they are remarkable

I mean, yeah I said it's not exactly conservatism for that sort of reason, but a prioritisation of personal satisfaction and a smaller radius of care seems to be a key part of conservative thought.

To be fair, in my highly liberal neighborhood accepting the label of conservative requires a divestment of any caring about what your peers think, which I guess may be reversed in other places. I think the point of increased selfishness stands tho

could be. as you say, your social context is one where people are acting under immense social pressure to pretend to be less selfish than they are so as to appear to be the right kind of person. i wonder if that social context is as predominant as it appears in media

if there are actually numerically more people acting under pressure to pretend to be more callous than they are, it might go otherwise than you think overall

*nodnod* weird how immersion in milieux of compassion and unselfishness convinces people that other people are loathsome and will only ever act decently through being coerced

Eh, silly to get so invested in such a single dimensional hypothetical. My original point stands: social approval is a primary motivator in the overturning of established oppression, particularly against minorities. Hatred of the other fulfils humans in the way you describe.
