I’m hearing that, as chaos, you feel vulnerable when called upon to summon calm mindfulness. It’s natural to feel compelled to act out opposite of a suggestion. Deescalation begins with validation in such lurid fantasies.

in dealing with an often angry 9yo, I notice that anger is not a useful state to determine the best course of action, because anger impairs self reflection and meta management, but an appeal to being less angry is not fruitful, for exactly that reason

i would be curious if you were to have or obtain any results on calling for self reflection and meta management despite/working through the impairment rather than calling for state change

This is an interesting point. I've been encouraged in the past to act out on emotion, or people said they'd understand if I did "X" or that they did "Y" under such emotional circumstances, things I'd never consider on my own. They supply a vector legitimizing self-destruction.
