sorry, i should say technology that can't deliver malware that affects computers. obviously there would be no point to display advertising if it couldn't deliver malware that affects other platforms

I don't think there was ever hope, advertising has an inherent level of hostility that will always lead to malware. The better question is what a system of open information exchange that isn't reliant on being a staging ground for hostile third parties looks like

Facebook. The guy running the website is also the guy posting the ads, so he's really incentivized to keep them non-evil. Or at least non-virus. Because that's a bad website experience. /And then they're big enough they can enforce actions against rule breakers.
