More seriously, the 'cost' to this would probably be in the form of greatly increased suicide rates. Many games have an expected etiquette around resigning/f4/GGing/tapping out that accepts once you are no longer in a position to reasonably contest the outcome you quit.

It's an open world :) and we all lose everything. Towards the end almost everyone ends up playing for time (everybody who wasn't buys it a lot earlier). If life is a game, it's basically Dwarf Fortress.

Really, also, suicide is redundant. If you're thinking suicidal thoughts, go for a walk and look at trees and clouds and consider that in time you'll die no matter what you do. That's the point where depression really inflects into any kind of purpose.
