I had a philosophy professor who was okay with infanticide. She had a point that utilitarianism wasn't for making people feel good about the rules qua the rules, but for maximizing the good of rules' outcomes.

it might be just me but i find that having obscure interests makes it easier to appreciate people with violently wrong opinions because when they're violently wrong about your obscure interests it's great that they're conversant enough with them to be wrong about them
