continually improving code by refactoring is an amazing way to learn to solve things centrally, in general ways, instead of copying and pasting slightly different solutions in fifty thousand places. this of course explains why most programmers learn to never refactor anything

You can add flags, or you can take advantage of the fact that bools are usually stored as bytes and set fModal = 3
