That one thing that happens in games where there's an entire section based entirely on a parody of something you don't really understand well enough to love, and it's just the most frustrating thing because it was cool up until then.

I mean, you can do it well by mixing it all together into a theme, creating a feeling of what it would be like to enjoy this thing for the first time, but you can't really build that out of "haha, you're fighting a sentai team, this isn't a tone shift or anything"

I think this actually says a lot about why, for example, Attack on Titan got so popular: It was a bridge between familiar themes, like the serious zombie shows that were around at the time, and this new "anime" style people like for reasons, I'm sure
