trauma triggers are somewhat adorably Bayesian. it's very much a "the downside risk of failing to identify that i am in situation X is ONE TRILLION BAD, so i will identify that i am in situation X on a 0.001% probability", implemented right down in the field-writable hardware

I think it’s less like that and more like the initial trauma permanently alters your priors so that the chance that you’re in situation x feels like it’s .1 when it’s really .00001 or whatever. Loud sound? If you’re in America it’s probably not the Viet Cong, but PTSD says it is

that's the more usual way of thinking but i think it winds up looking like that because the activation strengths on the traumatic conditioning are so high pattern classification math comes out the same either way, one is more intuitive if you haven't written ANNs

I just think explicit probability estimate is the wrong way to categorize it, because your internal probability estimate is different. Aliefs vs Beliefs.

Talk therapy doesn't work because it's not training, just like you can't learn to ride a bike or have good battle reflexes from a lecture.

It's like how if you tell a girl in your bedroom "Don't worry, it's totally safe in here" you're gonna get the opposite effect. Verbal explicit reasoning is separate from implicit knowledge. See also:https://twitter.com/shutupmikeginn/status/403359911481839617?lang=en …

yeah, i'm compressing a whole process there where the explicit/verbalizable/conscious probability estimate is used to shape the underlying one, i don't mean that the explicit one is directly to do with anything

that shaping is an experiential thing that the talk therapy is priming you for rather than carrying out, what i'm saying is the results are still mediocre because it's pushing on the wrong lever
