trauma triggers are somewhat adorably Bayesian. it's very much a "the downside risk of failing to identify that i am in situation X is ONE TRILLION BAD, so i will identify that i am in situation X on a 0.001% probability", implemented right down in the field-writable hardware

my qualitative personal experience (doing therapy for (C)PTSD) is that PTSD is a self-reinforcing thought system. so if you can bring up the trigger in a way that does not actually trigger the response and maintains safety, the loop gets retrained fairly rapidly
-
this is why entactogen therapy (MDMA and/or 2C-B, usually) works so ridiculously well; for many people it is almost impossible to actually experience the trauma response in that state. so you can pull up the trigger and metaphorically hold it in one's hand like it's harmless

tangential but I was just watching a video of a guy socializing feral kittens and he was emphasizing how you have to demonstrate to the cat that human hands are good HUNDREDS of times

it’s more me being thick than any particular insight, but I realize how much I discount emotional reinforcement of something over and over vs. updating on information once

Trauma can only exist in disassociation - a break from reality. It begins to dissolve when forced to confront physicality. That's why learning pole dancing can do more for your trauma than talk therapy.

Nailed it. My wife is an EMDR therapist, among other things. It works for a lot of people..Also probably why I immediately said "Trauma" to your earlier post. You did not disappoint by reaching this conclusion. Thanks for your daily reminders that some people still like to think.
