I think it’s less like that and more like the initial trauma permanently alters your priors so that the chance that you’re in situation x feels like it’s .1 when it’s really .00001 or whatever. Loud sound? If you’re in America it’s probably not the Viet Cong, but PTSD says it is

that's the more usual way of thinking but i think it winds up looking like that because the activation strengths on the traumatic conditioning are so high pattern classification math comes out the same either way, one is more intuitive if you haven't written ANNs
