it is an interesting ethical question as to, when we as a society enact policies that provide crucial general benefits but impose catastrophic costs on some people at random, whether we will take collective responsibility for those costs or say "lol get fucked losers"
that definitely seems like a shape of problem that would necessarily exist! which is handy if one were to want to pretend that it's the only shape of problem that exists

I dunno, people have been successful in proving cases of catastrophic harm and even suing for damages so I don't think it's all that pernicious.

If one thinks one has been catastrophically harmed, one should just keep doin' science to it and take solace in that one can deceive government, peer review and even oneself, but not reality itself.
