I don't follow his last sentence though, and kinda don't agree with his take on what meditation is or does. I appreciate the perspective though.

to be more specific, I don't see meditation as a means of paying off tech debt. it might be a means of identifying tech debt to be repaid with something else. I see meditation as being much closer to generating a test coverage report on your codebase, to extend the metaphor.

I actually don't like this metaphor though (for once). it's very tempting for people with technical training (and I think all 4 of us have technical training) to want meditation to be understandable using analogies to that, but I don't think it actually is.

dang, i like this metaphor a lot, if not for meditation then as a way of thinking about "shallow" vs. "deep" self-improvement; feels related to this distinction between "counteractive" and "transformative" therapy from Unlocking the Emotional Brain

I think paying down psycho-technical debt is a really important topic and all sorts of practices that actually do this are wonderful in support of meditation. there's a synergy effect for sure. I just don't think meditation is one of those practices.

and this should be obvious, imo, every time we read about a guru scandal or some otherwise fucked behavior from someone with 20000 hours on the cushion. no, I don't accept "but they were doing it wrong that whole time" as explanation.

i think "they were doing it wrong that whole time" is exactly
@meditationstuff's claim actually haha. would love to see you guys fight about this! more here:https://meditationstuff.wordpress.com/2019/08/23/it-is-broken-its-a-bug-lets-not-settle-lets-fix-it/ …1 reply 0 retweets 5 likes -
maybe they were doing it right the whole time maybe the technical debt that meditation helps enlighten you past includes normie morality and normie concepts of enlightenment

but certainly one source of problems here is that the space of things you cannot determine to be either a bug or a feature is proportional in size to the vagueness of your specification
