i would not entertain any claims that it is "just" a disinhibitor but claims that it isn't one have a tough row to hoe

Well, for one, being fairly nonspecific in its mechanism, it produces an array of effects that vary from individual to individual and even from case-to-case within individual, so the toughest row is backing a claim that alcohol NEVER has a behavioral effect X, for any X

for two, to the extent it does have specific effects (stochastically, nebulously), it anxiolytic effects are well balanced with specific effects with regards to aggression and mood destabilization

taking that together does not produce a picture of "drug brings out your true self" even if I accept, for the purpose of the argument, that reduction of "inhibitions" (impulse control?) brings out a "truer self"

i am making no claims about whether alcohol exposes your true self i am making the claim that if somebody preemptively tries to neutralize the meme that it does, it's because they act like a real piece of shit when they're drunk but want you to blame the booze

I dunno, I kinda think that you're reading too much into an entirely cromulent opinion on ethanol effects :) Also, given stochastic nature of alcohol effects it is generally advisable to "brace for shittiness" when interacting with drunk humans

well, if i run across a person who attempts this preemptive neutralization and doesn't turn out to be a horrible person i would have been better for getting the fuck away from right then, i will try to remember to discuss the update of my priors

I wonder how would one differentiate from "different personalities depending on presence of a chemical". I mean, I'm much more mellow and lazy when drunk, but I'm not convinced I'm faking being angrier and more driven when sober.

yeah, i'm a lot like that i don't feel like i'm faking my sober state either, but i do feel like it's what i'm like when i'm more strongly interactive with social pressures
