to expand, Asperger's/PDD-NOS is an actual thing that's etiologically related to what was historically called "autism", at a lower level of severity. whether that means it *is* autism is a question that's more about insurance coverage than anything else

k; it boils down to the stereotype being that when people on the internet talk about their autism, they mean something sufficiently mild that it's a great irritation to parents of severely disabled children that they call it "autism" and potentially threaten their resource access
