I run into this position online pretty regularly. I don't understand it at all. It's become a cult where the object of worship is, apparently, their very own selves, forever.

Isn’t immortality an age-old fixation? Ambrosia, Amrita, Golden Apples, the Peaches of Immortality...pic.twitter.com/tNBW26YuNW

the closest equivalent I would point to historically is alchemical longevity elixirs. the various magical/divine fruits and power plants are pointing at things outside of the reach of humans. this is about a scientific pursuit of longevity, a thing from man, not the gods.

Oh yeah important distinction. I guess there’s also frakenstein’s Monster style necromancy-adjacent tinkering?

the Frankenstein story is a really interesting development in cultural imagery of "necromancy", which was originally much closer in meaning to seánce type stuff, speaking with spirits of the dead, or performing divination with morbid artifacts (bones and such)

but in the 19th century it was transformed from the spiritual domain to the physical. Undeath and immortality are two sides of the same coin. Maybe some of my revulsion to the immortality cult is that it looks like praying for Undeath. Become a Lich!
