it's easy to see how hugely influential this guy was on modern ethics from the ivory tower right down to street level and how much that has to do with modern ethics being a giant trash fire

No he's not. Kierkegaard was one of the most original thinkers of the 19th century, and anticipated most of Nietzsche's best ideas without succumbing to Reddit-tier atheism.
