the way we talk about "pattern recognition" constructs it as a passive activity: we react to the pattern by noticing it when we see it this is catastrophically wrong the fundamental act is pattern *generation*, inductive construction of novel patterns to apply to the world

May I point out that, from a statistical perspective, when things are badly skewed the "humedian" is a better measure of center than the "humean."
