    the way we talk about "pattern recognition" constructs it as a passive activity: we react to the pattern by noticing it when we see it this is catastrophically wrong the fundamental act is pattern *generation*, inductive construction of novel patterns to apply to the world

        Not sure I'm following. If your assertion is that we do not recognize patterns that objectively exist, but rather impose them with our thinking, I would respond with an emphatic "sometimes." If that isn't your point, then I will instead ask about vigorous fucking.

        it's not quite that so much as that there are a *lot* of different patterns that can be recognized in any real phenomena, more and less obvious, more and less useful, and being able to classify yes/no on a given pattern is much less important than constructing the pattern
