Definitely recommend starting with Rider Waite. It's a solid choice, and would make a good basis of archetype comparison with any other deck you select after it. Plus, if things haven't changed since I practiced, many people have written about interpreting it.

Thirding Rider-Waite, less because "best deck" and more because Prince Valiant is literally the Rider-Waite Knight of Swords.pic.twitter.com/6QMWpEtsX3

The purpose of Tarot is to provide depth of reflection, whether it's reflecting something greater or your own image, so I advise caution about picking random-ass decks, because many "flatten" card meanings and thus angles of insight, but one that vibes with you is helpful.

The easiest litmus test is the Strength card. Sometimes it's VIII, sometimes it's XI, either is fine (but don't say that lest you be invited to Certamen). However, if they ditch the woman-with-lion imagery for just "strong dude" types of imagery, then trash the deck. Worthless.

What I was referring to was specifically changing the lion-tamer to a "muscly fellow! Atlas!!!" depiction, not other transformations, but just a common error that flattens Strength / Fortitude to just "as in Ahnold". I'd accept the pillar-breaker depiction, for sure.
