That’s disingenuous tho. Bc the “people around them” are women, poc, woc, disabled, gay, queer, trans, etc. They don’t know how to cope Bc they weren’t supposed to be surrounded by us.

That critique is true of upper class white liberals who have the resources to play on the national/international stage (as in, yeah, they "check their privilege" and donate to the occasional gofundme) & not at all true for the white working class who Bruenig was talking about.

The white working class (and the poc working class) both increasingly lack opportunities for an authentic heroism adjacent to the localist sphere they operate in precisely because they're modes of heroism aren't recognized as true heroism.

Whereas some upper class CEO can simply announce that he's checked his privilege and donated to United Way and call it day and thus be recognized (falsely) as a "hero". Society defines heroism by recognizing heroism. Unfortunately our current society has it all wrong.

quietly reassigning your resources to others doesn't feel like heroism to most people, it feels like being used. you can tell the ones it feels like heroism to because they no longer have any resources
