I still kind of am missing why westerners are so profoundly affected. We had all kinds of batshit drills. I had mandatory "good girl wife" lessons as "punishment" for beating other pupils up (it allowed me to grab 2 meals instead of 1 at state's expense tho, lol...)

People are bad at math, so 300 school shootings a year sounds like a lot when it's 0.03% of schools and with like a thousand kids per school and a dozen casualties from a shooting that's an 0.0003% chance of dying in a school shooting.

It's not that it's not a problem that should be solved, but it's not something worth being scared of.

unless of course the adults in your environment perform affective shaping by paying more attention to you and treating you as more important the more scared you are then it's super worth it

Yeah, I can't imagine what would happen to you if you played the statistics card here, but i bet involves at least a talk with the principal and some extremely serious reeducation interventions.

You don't have to blatantly refuse to go along with the drills, you just don't have to take them so seriously that you drive yourself crazy. You've got something like an 0.08% chance of dying in a fire and everyone treats fire drills like a joke.

i wonder how palpable the sense is that the kids who aren't freaking out about it are in some way Not Getting With The Program in blue counties, that is

Calling it a 'blue thing' is kind of a misnomer. The 'for the children' bloc has always been bipartisan, and they just happen to align on gun control at the moment.

it's the affective shaping that i suspect to be more prevalent in blue counties

That would be odd since it's traditionally a red trick. I was kind of surprised the blue side was even trying it. Assuming there's someone actually doing this on purpose and it's not just kids panicking because people fucked up.

it's not on purpose, it's an emergent outcome of blue v. red values

in a red room, a kid freaking out is embarrassing and some degree of pathetic, a stoic kid is strong and tough in a blue room, a kid freaking out should be attended to immediately and is valid because clearly they *get it*, a stoic kid is suspect and probably toxically masculine
