this will happen through a straightforward snowball effect, as a few dimly perceive the utility to be gained and quickly conceal this perception from themselves but retain the enthusiasm and energy it generates, which draws the simply desperate into their wake

I don't buy the "conceal from themselves" part tbh. A lot of this "self-deception" stuff is just whitewashing regular ass deception on account of it being hard to prove.

The Dunning-Krueger effect people forget about. Fucks up my behavioral forecasting, but useful thinking about the present/past behavior: people often do things that are smarter than they are, and those who default to assuming people are smart are much more likely to notice.
