True story: I was once part of a team which built a defense in a murder case around a theory that the defendant, in trying to save both themselves and the alleged victim, had to subdue them from doing this and simply overshot the mark. Did not go well.

Real talk: i learned rescue swimming a long time ago and the very first thing they taught us was “let go”. My instructor said that too often, rescue attempts resulted in two deaths, so if they fight you, you have let go and save yourself. Otherwise you both get to die.

Same. I remember an instructor quiping something about pulling them by the hair rather then getting in front of them, IIRC
