Generative Pronouns @cavesofqud is a magical game made more magical by @chaosprime who added a mod that procedurally generates pronouns for players. Procedural generation, gender deconstruction and a chance to put my linguistics minor to use? TIME FOR A THREAD 1/x

So you want to generate never-before-seen pronouns. Ok! easy, here you go: "The water merchant touches a cloth to abaraku brow." Not super intelligible. Turns out, it's not sufficient to generate a pronounceable word. The word must also be *recognizable* as a pronoun. 2/x

What makes an English word recognizable as a pronoun? Well, all English pronouns are monosyllabic. Easy enough. But there is a more complex pattern they all take part in. To understand it, we'll need to talk about... GRAMMAR 👻 3/x

English pronouns each have 3 Grammatical Cases -- versions of the word that indicate their role in a sentence. 1. The subject of a sentence. "She" won a Nobel prize. 2. The object of a sentence. Go talk to "him". 3. Relationship to another noun. That pie is "theirs". 4/x

i feel compelled to say that the genitive is split in two, the saxon genitive (his/her/their book) and the predicative genitive (the book is his/hers/theirs)
