in an environment of info overload, it’s easy to lose track of where “my” ideas come from i wonder how rare it is, historically speaking, to have so many beliefs that are detached from their source e.g. a Medieval farmer could probably trace their ideas back to church or family

thanks to the inter net, i have all these free-floating thoughts in my head that are totally untethered from the humans who came up with them maybe this explains why we’ve started to talk about memes as viruses or spirits that can infect people’s mindshttps://twitter.com/aaronzlewis/status/1164592494149083137?s=21 …

🅐🅩🅛 @aaronzlewisi’m seeing more and more people embrace the notion that humans can become hosts to parasitic memes “people don’t have ideas, ideas have people” seems like the reprise of a more spiritual sensibility — a tbt to when we used to talk about demonic possession https://twitter.com/davidklaing/status/1163841215017750529 …3 replies 4 retweets 33 likesShow this thread -

I swear we’re going full circle. Myths and Metaphors get taken too literally, get debunked as “false”, new metaphor arises, repeat. Survival of the fitness in memes reminds me a little too much of “spiritual warfare.”https://twitter.com/chaosprime/status/1164973034614272001 …

"survival of the fittest in memes" and "spiritual warfare" just sound like synonyms to me

Yeah, but try being deep in the actual community of the latter and suggesting this!

I have a pretty interesting spectrum of FB friends... the conservative older American Christians are currently discussing the Satanic dangers of Enneagrams.

To me it just sounds like another moral panic about the latest passing fad.

Like; this is literally the same day that Trump posts his “I’m basically King David and the Messiah” tweets, and they’re worried about... a personality test?

a slightly occulty personality test, sure, on about the level of a ouija board someone made a big chart once of all the different versions of the enneagram that show up, it's like dozens of people were writing about it and each just assigned the points however they felt like

I wonder why they’re fixated on “satanic” things like this, which are… games. To me the “satanic” is very much more the Moloch concept or the Girardian accuser. Wind the overly literal interpretation of a personal Satan back to being metaphor.

those are good Satans for an unbeliever, but for them Satan is just whatever's of this world rather than of God, which is to say anything that acts to limit or compromise their egregore's stable access to compute resources
