They are people you pay to tell you which oracle is most reliable for your question. They maintain a big database, which is what Chaos was telling them how to use.

i mean, that's what i would have thought, but apparently looking at too many of those Oracle UFO operators or whatever the fuck you call them gets you thinking that there's such a thing as a left inner join

Oracle was relatively late to support the SQL standard and used to have a nonstandard syntax for joins. I don't think you could use "left outer join" until like Oracle 8. I bet the consultant had touched too many forgotten legacy systems and gone native.

Thanks for those horrible flashbacks to my former life, SQL was the least of my problems with Oracle. At least my programming team understand the importance of 3rd normal form data base design!
