it is an endless delight how fluent we are with cultural practices we have never performed like how a SF show doesn't have to show you anything to tell you a hand-held energy weapon is powering up nearby, they can just put a capacitor whine on the audiohttps://twitter.com/LNoble16897806/status/1164214273926545408 …

this is reminding me of a time at the pool where some guy was haranguing his friend, who i think was from somewhere in western Asia, about how when he's asking about the guy's culture, he doesn't mean things like all the circumcision they do, that's religion, he means like food

other dude's concept of culture, of course, is nice things that can be shared with outsiders in a peaceful neoliberal milieu to give them a broader appreciation of the rich tapestry of humanity i.e. it's only culture if he can appropriate it

DS9 is *Bajoran*, with administrative assistance from the Federation. The Middle East is where the Gilgamesh story that Picard told at El-Adrel originally came from. And I hope this answers your question.

We also have a pretty good vocabulary of names and gestures relating to psychic powers. If someone in a film puts their fingers to their temple or wrinkles their brow menacingly while something happens nearby, no explanation is needed to fill in the connection.

I mean, I used to know people who were eventually in morgues? But we only hung out beforehand.
