people talk about "fragile egos". no shit they're fragile, they're Rube Goldberg mousetraps that, to the extent that we're taught to build them at all, we're taught by people trying to schmooze or brutalize us into constructing ours as a support structure for theirs

Inasmuch as your ego is a load-bearing part of some bigger social structure, ego death could be quite chaotic

in my model of this stuff, what you're doing by allowing your old belligerence-based ego to die is trying to build a new one that doesn't impose needless costs on others. which is a real mensch kind of thing to do, kudos
