unless you don't reflexively discount the idea that the deterrent could be doing anything, in which case there's considerably more that it's providing today

That requires accepting the absence of evidence as evidence. Seems more rewarding to compare USA with Japan or Germany (both forcibly disarmed) than with Libya.

does it though? isn't an explanation called for of why a risk of triggering a nation-ending insurrection would magically be completely ignored? Germany and Japan, wonder if anybody could impute some phenomena consistent with increasing immiseration and value extraction there
