this is analogous to the circular arguments people have about prostitution or allowing "market forces" to operate on intimate relationships the argument the anti people make isn't that the market can't price a sexual act, but that "price" is the an inappropriate analysishttps://twitter.com/chaosprime/status/1160209677667508224 …

similarly, with this question, cost/benefit is the wrong level of analysis yes, by agreeing on measurement, cataloging preferences, and observating of a relationship there will, at any point or on aggregate, someone who is "giving" more than they"get"

but that's that's not the point, the point is that it's the wrong level of analysis to measure a relationship except in a very general sense

In fact, it may be that the opposite is true that the sine qua non of a relationship is the extension of debts that can never be repaid it's one of the beautiful thing of relationships outside the economic realm, that they are formed on mutual gift giving, not a balancesheet

Replying to @ninthhostage
i don't know what you call it when you make decisions about whether the flow of the mutual gift giving is satisfactory to you, but possibly one could use the term "cost/benefit analysis"

honestly at this point i prefer saying things in nastiest way i can find and letting the nice parts be a nice surprise, having gotten sufficiently sick of things being said in the nicest way possible and having the nasty parts be a nasty surprise
