what a huge fucking asshole Aesop was sour grapes is an amazing high-EQ strategy and shaming people for using it is just propagating immense harm for the sake of showing off what a keen little goddamned observer you are

The Fox knows he's being facetious, of course. He's purposefully deceiving himself- he knows that he is incapable of reaching the grapes- so instead of obsessing, he Wills himself (in a petty manner) to forget. Good!

true, and that comes across fairly well. maybe it's not Aesop who's the asshole, it's the culture that deploys the fable toward shaming the behavior. he did pick the fox for the role after all

The Fox is not a blessed character in Aesop's canon. As a trickster, he's a vile, shameless creature- but at the same time, a gullible one. Naivete and cunning in one creature- used car salesman! http://www.read.gov/aesop/027.html http://www.read.gov/aesop/014.html http://www.read.gov/aesop/019.html
