the issue of mental illness in context of mass shootings is complicated, despite shooters generally being thoroughly fucked in the head, by the commitment on the woke left that mental illness, being a term of sympathy, is reserved for victim-coded people

Unless I'm missing something, that, along with the "toxic masculinity" explanation, requires an extremely provincial outlook. (Which is not to say the explanation is as simple as "the government.")

probably but sometimes they know things in the provinces that the metropole has forgotten

Maybe. But whatever the ultimate problem is, it is greatly exacerbated by easily available firearms.

Re the Gilroy shooter: "The teen’s grandfather... Santa Clara County supervisor who was accused and acquitted of molesting his daughter in 1982." "'Why are you doing this?' 'Because I’m really angry,' the gunman replied...." Pattern in the family. Gov't won't talk about it.

No one will talk about it. So boys keep on being murderously angry with no outlet. It's so buried the rage takes focus on other things in adolescence to avoid facing the reality of the childhood experience. Immigrants, hippies, whoever seems to be having a good time.
