why wouldn't people care about math in a world with magic?

Could be. I still bet math geeks would spend a lot of time figuring out if numeric patterns of handwaves or certain wave angles did anything. (And without the scientific method to do RCTs, might very well convince themselves that they did.) But maybe not.
