why wouldn't people care about math in a world with magic?

Counterpoint: development of arithmetic, geometry, algebra, and calculus all took place in a world that believed magic existed, and often by practitioners/students of some form. (Pythagoras, Newton, etc.)
-
said development enabled them to achieve results that were entirely mysterious to the uninitiated, i.e. it was magic perhaps it would have gone differently if the path of greatest reward were getting better at waving your hands in particularly patterns

that makes sense I mean, why would you spend billions learning how to make artificial stars when there’s perfectly good dynamite around, to make an analogy from our own world
