if kids at school spontaneously self-organized to torture you because of how you think, at some point somebody probably told you "oh, they're just afraid of people who are different" yes, and they are that way without any knowledge of why, but that doesn't make it unmotivated

less trollishly, it being more dangerous to kick people in the face and leave them bleeding in the cold than to bring them inside will be adapted to much, much more quickly than the behavior will extinct due to lack of danger

i at times wonder if in more lawless days people were less inclined to act poorly towards each other as retaliations were possible (with physical consequences); these days, the likelihood drops significantly, as physical retaliation is criminalized (and social bullying is not)
