in many ways presenting as your idealized self-image is more honest and self-disclosing than presenting as your rational self-image, which is necessarily enormously distorted. but being a fake phony isn't necessarily bad; it can be a form of service as easily as a manipulation

Very interesting line of thinking. Lately I've been considering the degree of hypocrisy in society as a whole. I found that "hypokrites" was a technical term for a stage actor. So is everyone actually acting?
