the exact difference between the fake phony and the real phony (cf. Breakfast at Tiffany's) is that the persona presented to you by the real phony is how the person would legitimately like to regard themself, while the fake phony presents what they think you would like to regard

in many ways presenting as your idealized self-image is more honest and self-disclosing than presenting as your rational self-image, which is necessarily enormously distorted. but being a fake phony isn't necessarily bad; it can be a form of service as easily as a manipulation

so in other words, if one has to be a lie, it is better to be a reflection of what one truly wants to be than to be a reflection of what one thinks someone else wants one to be
