so far in my adventures trolling antinatalists i can announce that ones who are that way because their lives suck all the time and they don't want more people to have to go through that are very good boys and girls, and ones who high IQ memed themselves into it are the worst

like, the real problem is that if you convince people to do one stupid thing for reasons of marshmallow utilitarianism, they'll start doing more

The idea that the position is built on logic or morality is ludicrous. The fact is that having children is less hedonistic than living in an urban playground doing drugs & drinking & having barren relationships, so people who like benatar are just back-justifying their hedonism
-
how cowardly. it's an insult to nihilistic hedonism to act as though it needs justification with such cringing measures

I entirely agree and would never defend *voluntaristic* anti-natalism, which is bottom-of-the-dumpster philosophical position. I was just asking about Benatar's argument considered as a motivation for non-voluntaristic anti-natalism (à la Horstmann, Ligotti)

but yeah, I guess it's based on hedonic utilitarianism it's not going to be very interesting. anyway.
