Yeah, it's still used a lot in fandoms AFAICT, or at least on fan twitter. Related terms: OTP = "one true pairing" like you *really* ship this couple (learned that one from my kids); slash (as in Kirk-slash-Spock) = sexy fan fiction.
"to ship" is to be a fan or partisan of a particular relationship ("ship") among characters in a media work, just by combinatoric math these will mostly be relationships that exist only in fanworks but canon relationships also considered
