lawl the funny thing is i think most people using it normally don't really have a concept of it being a wish either, so when you treat it as a claim they get annoyed and feel like you're misunderstanding something but they're not sure what it is

It’s a tonal thing. When I say it, I fancy it’s clear that it is a polite expression of greeting couched in a wish that your morning is and/or will be good.

What lightly chafes me is people who just say “Morning.”

I would have thought half the replies would probably be, "What a lot of things you do use 'good morning' for!"

Totally. It’s like: Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not; or that you feel good this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?
